Solar panels can utilise natural daylight to create your own power for your home. Over time, the solar panels on your home can become profitable and make you money each and every year. Investing in the best solar panels on the market is a great idea for the future of the planet and your pocket!
Simply put, if you installed solar panels for your home, they would capture the natural sunlight to create electricity to allow you to power your home. Each solar panel is around 65 by 40 inches and would be fitted to your pitched roof to benefit from unobstructed sunlight all day long.
Though solar panels will work best on south-facing roofs (as these benefit from sunlight all day long), there is still a benefit to be found in placing solar panels on roofs that face in other directions. Approximately 1,000,000 UK homes have solar panels installed, and the ability to generate your own power will only become more desirable as electricity prices rise.

Installing the best solar panels for your home comes with several unrivalled benefits over using energy from the national grid, that is generated by other means such as fossil fuels and nuclear power.
At its core, solar energy is a completely renewable source. The generation of solar energy doesn’t pollute the environment, create noise or harm the atmosphere. Solar panels will remain effective as long as the sun is shining – meaning you can create a green energy source for the next 5 billion years!
While generating your own energy your reliance on the national grid is weaker. If the grid is supplying you with less energy, then your electricity bills will begin to drop! You won’t be completely cut off – the national grid will still be there as a backup if you haven’t generated enough energy for what you need to use. Don’t forget you can also sell extra energy you generate back into the grid, so overall you could remain a profitable home!
Depending on where in the UK you’re living, the addition of solar panels for your home could add up to £90,000 to the value of your home when it comes time to sell. Not only this, but homes with solar panels typically sell faster than those without. Why wouldn’t a prospective new owner want to instantly save on their electricity and energy bills?
Solar panels are a static investment, the lack of moving parts means they require less maintenance than your car! Though we recommend servicing, this will usually be to check for broken panels, loose or corroded wiring, and to clean the solar panels to ensure they are performing to full efficiency. A high-quality installation of the best solar panels possible means that you can benefit from all the advantages, without a worry about the longevity of your installation. All solar panels are designed to be self-cleaning with natural rainwater – bird droppings and falling leaves become your only worry!

Ideally, a south-facing roof would give you the most effective power generation for each solar panel. With an east or west-facing roof, efficiency will drop by around 15%. This is because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, meaning roofs facing in these two directions will only be effective for half of the day. A north-facing roof is the least effective, but the beauty of a north-facing roof at the front of your property – means that it is a more effective south-facing roof at the rear of your property.
The number of solar panels you need all depends on what you’re trying to achieve and your current electricity usage. In order to gain independence from the grid the average one-bedroom house will need 6 solar panels, and the average three-bedroom house will require 10 solar panels. This however will also depend on the amount of sunlight that you can benefit from in your area, as well as having a sufficient battery and inverter system in place. Having fewer solar panels can still be beneficial, as this will still help to reduce your dependency on electricity from the grid.
Absolutely! Solar panels work best when angled to receive the most sunlight. Therefore, the best solar panels are installed on south-facing pitched roofs already at this angle. However, since a flat roof technically doesn’t face any direction, a mounting system can be installed on the roof to tilt the panels. This ensures the perfect direction and angle is selected for your solar panels, as well as to prevent water damage from pooling rainwater.
Solar panels begin to show a return on your investment when they produce more energy than you’re using, or that you can store. Since the start of 2020, energy suppliers have been obligated by law to pay households for any energy they export back into the grid. This is known as the Smart Export Guarantee and since you don’t have to sell your excess energy to the same provider you get your current electricity supply from, it’s worth shopping around for the best rate per kWh of energy you produce.
The government are keen for homeowners to install energy-saving measures so have left legislation purposely lenient when it comes to installing solar panels. Solar panels come under a ‘permitted development’, meaning planning permission is not required for most UK domestic properties. As well as this, the installation of solar panels now comes under a 0% VAT tariff as of April 2022 – passing on yet more savings to you!
